New Subjects are a 4-piece band from Essex: Johnny Thorpe, (vocals/guitar) Gary Whitington (MC/vocals), Matt Richards (drums) and Ben Maskell (keyboards). Their original sound is acoustic layered with a distinctive urban edge. Soulful meets street…
In 2009, Johnny and Gary formed New Subjects, performing in bars around their hometown. ‘Gambling Man’ became their first song, inspired by Johnny’s soft spot for fruit machines, after Gary joked “I’m going to write a rap about you…” With Gary’s lyrics, Johnny’s vocals and chords, New Subjects became the unexpected unique, urban act on the live music scene.
In 2011, Matt joined the band asdrummer, bringing a much needed fuller sound. Six months later, an application to Live and Unsigned 2011 led New Subjects to the Grand Final at the IndigO2, where the band finished fifth place in their genre from 10,000 entries across the country.
Towards the end of a very successful year, Ben became the band’s fourth member, adding a melodic element and a brand new sound.
With clear-cut rap complimented by rhythmic guitar and uplifting beats, New Subjects bridge the gap between indie and hip-hop appealing to a varied audience.
